Humane Educators & Students Take Action for Animals Used in Education

One of Animalearn’s goals is to bring about change within the science education community. Since the mid 2000’s, Animalearn has highlighted standout humane science educators and humane students who have taken bold actions on behalf of animals used in education. From our perspective, an important way to impact science education is to share the stories of those humane educators and students so they can inspire other compassionate educators and students to follow in their footsteps.

Humane Science Educator
of the Year Award

Animalearn annually recognizes humane science educators who have made a difference for animals used in science education and distinguishes one standout as our Humane Science Educator of the Year. In recent years, we have additionally awarded honorable mentioned science educators. One such Honorable Mention is Lauren Apodaca, a middle school science teacher from Las Cruces, NM. Lauren was named as an Honorable Mention in 2023 for prioritizing humane treatment of animals, emphasizing alternatives and promoting a compassionate approach to scientific inquiry. Apodaca stated, "This honorable mention is not only a nod to achievement but represents the importance of understanding the mysteries of our world, about fostering a deep respect for life and promoting ethical stewardship of the world we explore together!"

A general call for educator nominations is sent out close to the end of each year. Selected educators are awarded $1,500 worth of non-animal dissection resources for their classrooms.
