Animalearn helps University of Georgia vet school launch shelter medicine program and develop DVD surgical tutorial for Fall 2009.

A new report, “Dying to Learn: Exposing the Supply and Use of Dogs and Cats to Higher Education,” documents the hidden practices of higher education, proving that science lab students are using former pets at major colleges and universities. It traces the route that brings dogs like Cruella, a sheperd-mix from Michigan, to an unhappy end at a university teaching lab.

“Dying to Learn” is the result of a two-year investigation of animal acquisition and use from 92 public colleges and universities in the U.S. It reveals that 52% of colleges and universities are using live and dead dogs and cats for teaching even though viable alternatives are available and are being used by other schools. In addition, the report identifies specific schools that are obtaining animals from unethical sources.
