Searchable Databases for Non-animal Alternatives Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) www.nal.usda.gov/awic AWIC is part of the National Agricultural Library, U.S. Department of Agriculture. AWIC was established by the United States Congress in 1986 with the mandate to acquire and disseminate information on alternatives and improved methodologies for the humane care, use, and handling of all animals in research, testing, and education. Copies of the database can be downloaded from its website. The Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) http://caat.jhsph.edu CAAT is operated out of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and is one of the organizations participating in an initiative to create a global consortium of information on alternatives databases. EURCA www.eurca.org The European Resource Centre for Alternatives in High Education or Eurca actively promotes the use of alternatives to using animals in higher education. They aim to provide a mechanism for effective dissemination of information about alternatives to using animals in higher education. InterNICHE www.interniche.org International Network for Humane Education or InterNICHE is an open and diverse network comprising students, teachers and animal campaigners. The network focuses on animal use and alternatives within biological science, medical and veterinary medical education. This website lists a large compendium of alternatives. NORINA provides information on over 3500 audiovisual aids and other alternatives such as computer programs to the use of animals or animal products in teaching, at all levels from junior school to university. University of California Center for Animal Alternatives www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/Animal_Alternatives/main.htm The UC Center for Animal Alternatives serves the animal care community of the University of California's nine campuses and laboratories, focussing mainly on alternatives in education and the issues surrounding the third R, Refinement. It also acts as a referral service, providing information on how best to search for required information. The Center publishes a newsletter, UC Alert, and guides to information resources.
