How many animals are dissected every year?
A reasonable estimate is that about six million vertebrate animals are dissected yearly in U.S. high schools alone, with an additional, unknown number used in colleges and middle and elementary schools. The number of invertebrate animals dissected is probably comparable to that of vertebrates.

Choice Laws and Legislation (K-12)
Dissection choice laws usually apply to kindergarten through high school, and allow students to refuse to participate in classroom exercises$#45;particularly dissections$#45;that involve animals. These laws usually require the school to notify students and/or their parents at the beginning of a course when animal dissection is part of that course. They are intended to allow students the right to choose humane alternatives, without being penalized for doing so.
